Seminars/Workshops
On January 20, 2007 the United Martial Science Federation in conjunction with The Art of the Warrior Magazine presented "A Scientific View of the Martial Arts.” The workshop featured internationally renowned martial artist, Chief Master Marlin Sims, and was held at Hales Franciscan High School, 4930 S. Cottage Grove, Chicago, Illinois.
Master Sims would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the Art of the Warrior Martial Arts Magazine and all the martial artists who came out and participated in the First Annual Winter Workshop. Chief Master Marlin Sims was assisted by two of his long time students of more than twenty years, Master Cheryl Cherowitz and Chief Instructor Bill Page of the United Martial Science Federation.
Master Sims lectured on the first class of Martial Art 101 titled “Fundamental Skills and Principles of Martial Arts” covering the laws of motion and how they apply to martial artists’ skill sets. Some of the concepts taught in the lecture included energy, work, velocity, speed, acceleration, power, mass, torque, force, and Newton’s three laws of motion as they related to translational and rotational motion. After which he tied these into conservation of momentum, impulse and levers and how they are used to create force in an attack. He also demonstrated how those same forces travel through the bodies of both the person doing the attacking and the one receiving the blow.
After the lecture everyone was divided into three groups; Archery, Knife Throwing and Techniques for practice. Master Sims in the technique portion, showed how joint locks regardless of styles are based on only fifteen techniques. The group learned that in studying the arm, we have three major joints and those three joints have fifteen different movements which can be combined into thousands of techniques.
Men, women and children of all ages and ranks attended the workshop . Each participant received a handout on each subject taught. Master Cheryl Cherowitz assisted Master Sims with the archery portion and taught the children the “Western” style of shooting the bow, and adults “Eastern” style of shooting by using the thumb to pull the bow. Everyone got the opportunity to pull the bow and shoot numerous arrows. Chief Instructor Bill Page assisted Master Sims in teaching the knife throwing portion of the workshop. Participants were excited to be able to accomplish the skills necessary to throw knives using both handle and blade throws from different distances in such a short time.
